Managers and association boards may want to remind owners that as of January 1, 2013, carbon monoxide alarms will now be required for apartments and condominiums with fossil fuel burning appliances and/or attached garages.  This requirement went into effect for single family homes on July 1, 2011.  One alarm is required outside each sleeping area, on each story and in the basement, if there is one.  The alarms have to be UL approved.  You can use hardwired or plug-in alarms if they have a battery back-up or battery operated ones.  Combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are also acceptable.  Some exemptions apply.  For your reference  attached is the Frequently asked questions on Carbon Monoxide distributed by the California Fire Department with references to its websites for additional information or you can obtain more information from your local fire department.
